CT to receive $154M from federal government to boost rural health

Connecticut will receive more than $154 million from a federal program intended to improve health care in rural communities.

The award from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is part of the $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program to benefit all 50 states that was established under the Working Families Tax Cuts legislation approved by Congress.

The first round of funding, announced by CMS on Monday, is intended to strengthen and modernize health care in rural areas nationwide.

In 2026, states will receive first-year awards from CMS averaging $200 million, within a range of $147 million to $281 million. Connecticut will receive $154.2 million.

The federal investment, officials said, will help states expand access to care in rural communities, strengthen the rural health workforce, modernize rural facilities and technology and support innovative models that bring high-quality, dependable care closer to home.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the investment “puts local hospitals, clinics and health workers in control of their communities’ health care.”

CMS said the program’s $50 billion will be allocated over five years, with $10 billion available each year from 2026 through 2030.
