A company alleged to have circumvented consumer privacy settings in the Safari web browser will pay the state $110,000 as part of a multi-state legal settlement, officials announced.
The money from PointRoll Inc. is part of an overall $750,000 six-state settlement.
PointRoll is a Pennsylvania-based digital advertising and services company owned by the publishing and media company Gannett.
The states, led by New Jersey, alleged that the company overrode users’ third-party “cookie” settings, allowing it to gather information that consumers did not wish to share, such as what websites they visit.
