The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority said it has created a new area code, as seven-digit combinations falling under the 860 code are expected to be exhausted this year.
Starting in August, a 959 area code will take effect for new customers or those adding additional lines or moving their service, PURA said.
The 860 code, which came into being in 1995, covers much of the state, with the exception of the southwestern portion.
A single area code covers about 10 million people, but the number is reduced to approximately 7.9 million because certain prefix combinations are not allowed, such as those that begin with zeroes or ones, a PURA spokesman said.
Existing customers won’t see any changes, PURA said.
