CT to get BMW electric car

Connecticut will be one of the first four states in the country to receive BMW’s electric car when the automaker introduces it into select markets for a field trial later this year.

The BMW ActiveE field trial will begin next summer in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and California. The experience gained in this field trial will prepare the automaker for the introduction of its electric Megacity Vehicle in 2013.

Rich Steinberg, manager of electric vehicle operations and strategy for BMW of North America, said he is looking forward to working with Northeast Utilities and its subsidiary Connecticut Light & Power during the field test.

Connecticut also will be one of the first markets in the nation to receive Chevrolet’s electric Volt when it debuts next year. The state has been identified as a leader in the electric vehicle market as Gov. M. Jodi Rell put together a task force to build up the state’s electric vehicle support infrastructure, such as charging stations.
