CT taxi firm buys natural gas vehicles

Metro Taxi of West Haven is taking delivery of 20 vehicles powered by compressed natural gas.

Metro owner Bill Scalzi is adding a CNG fueling station to his facility, hoping to combat rising gas prices with vehicles with costs offset by government funding. The 20 cars are the Transit Connect Taxis provided by the Ford Motor Co.

Ford said sales of its CNG taxis are on the rise, particularly in Connecticut, Las Vegas, Boston, Chicago and St. Louis. The company also offers CNG vans and heavy-duty trucks.

“Fleet managers are adding all the reasons up and concluding that it makes sense to switch to CNG now more than ever,” said Rod Phillips, New England Ford commercial business manager, in a press release.
