CT sub base closes gates over package

The Navy’s New London submarine base has reopened its gates following an alert prompted by a report of a suspicious package, The Associated Press reports.

Base spokesman Christopher Zendan says the package near a parking lot was investigated but a military working dog did not detect any traces of explosives.

Zendan said a civilian passerby alerted authorities Monday morning. Two gates onto the Naval base in Groton were temporarily closed while security and public safety teams responded.

Zendan said the matter remains under investigation.
