CT state colleges consider tuition hike

The Connecticut State University system is expected to join the University of Connecticut and the state’s community colleges and raise tuition, The Associated Press reports.

The Finance and Administrative Committee of the Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet Thursday to consider a 2.5 percent tuition hike for the next academic year. The full board takes up the issue on April 7.

If approved, the average tuition and fees would jump by $198 for in-state undergraduate commuter students and $446 for in-state undergraduate students who live on campus.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has proposed cutting the system’s budget by $17.6 million next year. The New Haven Register reports that the tuition increase in 2012 is expected to raise $7.8 million toward closing that budget gap.

CSUS oversees Central, Eastern, Southern and Western Connecticut State universities.
