CT State 2011 tuition, pay freeze coming

The Connecticut State University System is likely to vote Thursday to freeze nonunion salaries as a prelude to fall 2011 tuition freeze, officials said.

Trustees of the system that runs the state’s four state universities are expected at their next meeting to embrace a board and finance committee recommendation to freeze salaries for nonunion staff in the fiscal year that begins July 1, 2011.

Some 36,000 students attend Central, Southern, Eastern and Western State University, where commuting in-state pupils pay $8,000 a year. Out of state students pay $18,000 a year.

“We recognize the economic challenges facing many of our students and their families, and will remain steadfast in our commitment to providing affordable, accessible, high quality education.,” said CSUS Chairman Karl J. Krapek.  “Adopting the recommendation would make our intent clear — to keep tuition at current levels.”

In July, trustees rescinded pay raises for top university administrators after Gov. M. Jodi Rell criticized the raises as unaffordable at a time when the state faces a budget deficit and many Connecticut residents and students face economic hardship.
