CT sinks another $1M into New Haven biomed

A small New Haven cardiac-tool developer lured to Connecticut from Virginia nearly two years ago has gotten a second, $1 million investment from the state’s technology investment arm.

EpiEP Inc. received $1 million from Connecticut Innovations Inc. in June 2010 to entice it to move its operations north. EpiEP initially agreed to move its five workers to the state and hire two more.

On Tuesday, CI announced it has doubled down on its earlier investment from its Eli Whitney Fund, enabling EpiEP to continue testing of its less-invasive tool for entering the heart’s outer layer to treat potentially deadly irregular heartbeats.

The EpiAccess device underwent animal testing at Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic last summer, and is in its first human trials in Europe, said EpiEP CEO Pamela Bunes. The device has a patent pending.

CI’s stake is part of a $1.6 million equity infusion that involved LaunchCapital and other private investors.
