Connecticut’s seasonal shutdown of a pair of shoreline bird-nesting preserves is underway, and regulators are asking the public’s caution to protect the species.
Milford’s Charles Island and Duck Island in Westbrook are closed to the public until Sept. 9, the state  Department of Environmental Protection said Monday.
The measures are to protect birds that live in coastal and offshore areas – including snowy and great egrets, glossy ibis, least terns, piping plover and little blue herons – and use them as nesting areas.
The DEP is asking beachcombers, dogwalkers, sunbathers, and boaters along the Connecticut shoreline to respect the fencing and yellow signs warning of nesting sites.
