CT sheds 6,000 jobs, unemployment rate flat

Connecticut lost 6,000 jobs in August, or 0.4 percent, while the unemployment rate remained at 8.1 percent, the state Department of Labor said.

Private sector gains of 2,300 jobs during the month were not enough to overcome local government sector losses of 7,500.

Officials said the higher-than-normal July number was driven by a seasonal adjustment process confused by the late closing of the school year. The August declines corrected the pattern.

Officials also revised downward July’s 11,500 job gains to 9,600.

The state’s unemployment rate has been hovering between 8 percent and 8.1 percent this year. The state has added 15,400 jobs over those eight months compared to the same period in 2012.
