Food service workers at Connecticut’s 23 highway service plazas, represented by 32BJ SEIU, have ratified their first union contract, the union announced Friday.
The five-year agreement, reached with Applegreen USA Travel Plazas Central Services, covers hundreds of employees working at franchise locations along Route 15, Interstate 95 and Interstate 395, according to the union.
The contract runs from April 1, 2026, through March 1, 2031.
According to the union, the deal includes provisions for more predictable schedules, a grievance and arbitration process, vacation accruals, training opportunities and wages aligned with Connecticut’s standard wage law.
The agreement follows a multi-year organizing effort that began in 2019. Workers had raised complaints about wages, working conditions and benefits. In November, Applegreen reached a settlement with the state attorney general’s office and agreed to provide a path to unionization.
Negotiations on the initial contract began in January after workers voted to unionize in December.
Union officials described the agreement as one of the first of its kind in the fast-food sector.
