One of New England’s largest senior living operators, with 15 communities in Connecticut, has signed an $890 million partnership with one of the nation’s leading real estate investment trusts, authorities say.
Benchmark Senior Living in Boston and its 3,009 units of senior housing in 34 communities are now part of the portfolio of Health Care REIT Inc., of Toledo, Ohio, the companies said Wednesday.
Under the terms of the deal, Health Care REIT will own a 95 percent partnership interest and Benchmark will own the remaining 5 percent interest and continue to operate the properties under a management contract.
The Benchmark portfolio includes communities that provide services for independent and traditional assisted living, as well as specialized services for the memory impaired and respite stays.
In Connecticut, Benchmark’s properties are in Avon, Brookfield, East Haven, East Lyme, Hamden, New London, Meriden, Middletown, Milford, Rocky Hill, Trumbull, South Windsor, Waterbury and Woodbridge. A 15th Connecticut property, in Ridgefield, is not part of the deal, a spokesman said.
The rest of the New England properties that are part of the deal are in Massachusetts (13); Rhode Island (3); New Hampshire (2); Vermont (1); and Maine (1).
