The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection is looking for power generated by biomass, landfill gas, or run-of-river hydropower in order to meet the state’s renewable requirements.
The new requests for proposals comes after Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced the state’s planned contract with 250 megawatts of Maine wind power and 20 megawatts of Lisbon solar power.
By 2020, Connecticut wants to have 20 percent of its power come from Class I renewable sources like wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and fuel cells.
Under the latest RFP seeking biomass, landfill gas, and hydro, selected projects will enter into 10-year contracts with electric utilities Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating. The Maine wind and Lisbon solar proposals are seeking approval of 15-year contracts from regulators.
Among the many possibilities for the biomass contract, NRG Energy has been trying to get state support for a 40 megawatt biomass plant in Montville.
