The regional school district for Haddam and Killingworth has outsourced its school-bus service in a deal purported to save taxpayers $2.4 million over five years.
Regional School District 17 recently agreed to sell its bus fleet to Student Transportation of America, based in Wall, N.J., which will run it under contract beginning Monday. STA has a regional bus yard in Groton.
Next week, STA is scheduled to pay the district $830,000 to purchase its existing bus fleet. In addition, STA says it has placed a $770,000 order for new buses to be delivered over the summer.
District 17 bus drivers have been offered jobs with STA, which has hired four additional full-time drivers to start on Monday.
STA also serves school systems in Groton, Guilford, Greenwich, Griswold, Danbury, New London, Naugatuck and Ledyard.
