Connecticut’s Board of Education has selected a veteran administrator as the state’s interim education commissioner, The Associated Press reports.
George Coleman, the department’s deputy commissioner, was selected unanimously Wednesday to lead the department until newly inaugurated Gov. Dan Malloy recommends a permanent replacement.
Coleman also was interim education commissioner for part of 2006 and 2007 until Mark McQuillan was appointed. McQuillan, who completes his term Wednesday, did not seek reappointment.
Coleman started his career in 1972 as a classroom teacher in Brooklyn, N.Y., and holds degrees from Tuskegee Institute and Columbia University. He has worked for Connecticut’s Department of Education since 1987.
