CT sandcastle builder going for new record

Renowned Canton sandcastle creator Ed Jarrett has drawn more than a half dozen commercial sponsors as he prepares another world record-setting build to raise more than $100,000 for Connecticut charities.

Jarrett, who has held the Guinness World Record for tallest sandcastle since 2003, will attempt his tallest yet, at 35 feet tall, on the grounds of Winding Trails Camp in Farmington. His current record is 31 feet, seven inches, set in 2007 to best his previous record of 29 feet, three inches set four years earlier.

Thousands of volunteers are being recruited to help Jarrett with the outdoor build that will take about two months to achieve, said event spokeswoman Laura Phillips Ward. Jarrett is director of golf and clubhouse operations at the Farmington Woods public course in Avon.

Among sponsors is Dunning Sand & Gravel, which is donating the estimated 200 tons of sand Jarrett and his build team will need when they begin work on April 1, Ward said. Accounting/consulting firm Kostin Ruffkess, the Farmington Field Club and Flaggstead Smokehouse also are project backers.

In addition, Granby film producer Rich Wright Productions has signed on to film a documentary covering Jarrett’s latest effort as well as his previous builds.

The build is slated to raise money for Save Walton Pond, Special Olympics Connecticut, Gifts of Love, New Horizons, and the University of Connecticut Children’s Cancer Fund.
