CT sales tax holiday starts next week

Shoppers in Connecticut will enjoy discounts next week when the state’s sales tax free week goes into effect.

From Aug. 18 to Aug. 24, most retail clothing and footwear items under $100 will be exempt from sales and use tax, a statement from the state Department of Revenue (DRS) said. That applies to all items under $100, regardless of the amount.

“Sales tax free week was included as part of the biennial budget that was supported by House and Senate Democrats and signed into law this summer by Governor Lamont,” DRS said. “It’s estimated that Connecticut shoppers will benefit from approximately $4.9 million in savings during the sales tax holiday.”

While Lamont signed the legislation, his support is a departure from earlier this year, when his administration submitted a budget proposal that would have ended the tax holiday week. His budget office at the time said getting rid of sales tax free week would save the state $5 million per year.

However, Lamont appears to have changed his tune, touting tax free week in a statement.

“Having this tax-free holiday helps working families stretch their dollar a little bit more during the busy back-to-school season while giving businesses an extra boost to their bottom line,” the governor said.

“I also encourage residents during this busy shopping week to consider locally-owned retailers and supporting Connecticut’s small business community,” he continued.
