Republican leaders in the state Legislature have released their own deficit-reduction plan, which includes cutting government spending by $466 million and reducing the state sales tax.
Republicans said Friday that they’re rejecting Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s proposal to cut state aid to cities and towns by $84 million, and they want to reduce the sales tax rate from 6 percent to 5.5 percent to save consumers $129 million.
The GOP says spending across state government should be cut by 6.5 percent.
The state’s budget deficit is estimated at nearly $470 million, and Rell has called the Democrat-controlled General Assembly back to the Capitol Dec. 15 for a special session on the budget.
It remains unclear if the legislature will take any action that day. (AP)
