CT regulator fines Ohio insurer $170K

Connecticut’s top insurance watchdog has fined an Ohio-based specialty, property and casualty insurer $170,000 for using unlicensed agents in the state to sell its products.

Insurance Commissioner Thomas Sullivan said a recent examination by his agency found that American Modern Home Insurance Company, or AMHIC, had 75 agents who were not appointed and 11 individual agents who were not licensed to write business in Connecticut.

AMHIC was notified of the violation and reacted quickly to resolve the non-compliance, Sullivan said.

Connecticut state law requires individuals who sell insurance products within the state to be licensed with the insurance department. Additionally, those individuals must be appointed by the company or companies they represent, which is also filed with the insurance department.

“We appreciate American Modern Home Insurance Company working with the State of Connecticut toward an expeditious resolution to the alleged infractions,” Sullivan said.
