CT recovers $6M from insurance disputes

Connecticut insurance regulators say they recovered $6 million in 2010 for consumers and taxpayers from policy and claims disputes and violations of state regulations.

Acting Insurance Commissioner Barbara Spear said agency examiners primarily helped health, accident and auto policyholders and claimants recover about $3.4 million they were owed from January to December 2010.

The agency collected another $2.4 million in fines from insurers and brokers for unfair treatment of customers. That money was turned over to the state’s General Fund.

In 2009, insurance regulators recovered about $3.2 million for claimants and another $2.1 million in fines were collected, said spokeswoman Donna Tommelleo.
