Connecticut ranked No. 32 in the nation in the growth of women-owned businesses, according a report released by American Express OPEN.
Since it began tracking U.S. Census Bureau data on the topic in 1997, American Express said the number of women-owned businesses in Connecticut has grown 35 percent to 97,700 in 2010, putting the state behind the national average of 50 percent growth.
While the number of Connecticut women-owned businesses is lagging, the revenue from those businesses is above the national average, at No. 17. Revenue from the state’s women-owned businesses reached $15.4 billion in 2010, a 66 percent increase since 1997, the survey showed.
The number of employees from women-owned Connecticut businesses rose to 92,200 in 2010, a 17 percent increase from 1997.
Nationally, the number of women-owned businesses has increased 50 percent to 8.1 million since 1997.Â
