Just in time for Mother’s Day, a new study claims Connecticut is the third best state for working moms based on factors like workday length, family leave policies, and school system quality. In one key metric, though, the state is in the middle of the pack.
WalletHub.com said Connecticut is 37th in the nation when it comes to professional opportunities. Connecticut is also ranked 24th for the ratio of female executives to male executives.
However, that could be balanced somewhat by the state ranking first in the country for work-life balance.
Under WalletHub.com’s system a No. 1 rank is considered a best environment for a working mom and 25 is average. Here’s how Connecticut ranks:
- Access to pediatric services – 6th
- Ratio of female executives to male executives – 24th
- Parental leave policy – 2nd
- Length of average woman’s workday – 8th
- Percent of single-mom families in poverty – 6th
- WalletHub’s “Best School Systems” ranking – 9th
Vermont was considered the top state for working moms. Nevada came in last among all the states and the District of Columbia.
According to the WalletHub.com report, women comprise nearly half of the American workforce, and slightly less than three-quarters of them are single moms with young children. It said women still earn only 79 cents for every dollar that men make and have far less upward mobility, as evidenced by the fact that only 4 percent of S&P 500 companies’ CEOs are female. “Even the new crop of high-profile female CEOs seems to be drastically underpaid compared with their male peers,” the report said.
