New Britain’s Community Mental Health Affiliates received $5,000 from the Farmington Bank Community Foundation to support the agency’s Child & Family Services programs in New Britain. Community Mental Health Affiliates is a private nonprofit behavioral health and substance abuse treatment provider that offers treatment for more than 6,000 children, adolescents and adults each year.

Trinity alumni and former heumatologist and medical professor Paul Bilka, who died last year, has established 23 charitable gift annuity funds over two decades to generate student aid funding for his alma mater. The Paul J. Bilka ’40 Trinity Neighborhood Scholarship Fund is valued at almost $720,000. It will be a permanent fund with its yearly income used to support students with financial need. Funding will be geared toward students from neighborhoods surrounding the college, the Learning Corridor programs, or members of the Trinity College Boys & Girls Club.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving awarded seven grants to various community improvement projects in Suffield totaling $66,660, as part of the Amiel P. Zak Public Service Fund. The grants will go to the Suffield Firemen’s Association, Friends of the Farm at Hilltop, the Around Town Singers and Orchestra, the town of Suffield, the Friends of the Canal at the Enfield Falls, Connecticut Landmarks and the Suffield Little League.

Wethersfield’s Dutch Point Credit Union awarded $5,000 in Dorothy J. Sullivan Scholarships to local students. Winners included: Sage Dieterle, Coventry High School; Laura Dobmeier, Rocky Hill High School; Caroline Gonsalves, East Lyme High School; Leana Jannetty, Wolcott Catholic High School; and Alana Waggoner, Conard High School. Each student was awarded $1,000 based on academic record, leadership qualities and community involvement.

United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut Women’s Leadership Council’s third annual Power of the Purse event raised over $222,000 to support the financial literacy of Hartford women and families. United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, located in Hartford, mobilizes people and organizations to give, advocate and volunteer to help children, ensure families are healthy and financially secure, and provide access to basic needs.
