CT prison inmates helping clear snow

Connecticut is pressing prison inmates into service to help clear snow from fire hydrants, The Associated Press reports.

Correction Department spokesman Brian Garnett says inmates from the Enfield and Willard-Cybulski prisons are working in the Enfield area Thursday and inmates from the Bergin Prison ion Storrs are assisting the Tolland Fire Department.

He says Commissioner Leo Arnone has directed other prisons to make inmates available in their host communities.

Garnett says the inmates on the work crews are carefully screened, minimum security offenders who are working under the supervision of corrections officers.
