CT physicians group among Harvard Pilgrim grant recipients

Physician practices in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire will receive grants this year from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care to fund 16 initiatives designed to improve care delivery and reduce costs within a variety of care models.

Harvard Pilgrim’s program is focused on supporting projects targeted at clinical practice transformation, care coordination and development of components of the Patient-Centered Medical Home.

Connecticut’s grant recipient is Medical Professional Services, a Middletown-based multispecialty independent physician association. The primary goal of its project is to improve patient safety and outcomes by improving the quality of care provided to patients with chronic pain, according to a project description on Harvard Pilgrim’s website. Using technology that improves care coordination between specialists and primary care will help achieve this goal, it said.

Harvard Pilgrim has funded more than 200 initiatives totaling more than $18 million over the past 16 years, it said.

“By offering these grants, we are challenging physicians in our region to improve the experience of our patients and the quality of their care,” Dr. Michael Sherman, senior vice president and chief medical officer at Harvard Pilgrim, said in a news release. “We look forward to discovering innovative best practices that will be shared throughout the region to truly raise the bar for our members.”
