CT permits for new housing drop 80 percent

Connecticut’s economic development agency says the number of permits issued for new housing dropped 80 percent in January, compared to a year ago.

The state Department of Economic and Community Development says the 128 towns and cities that report monthly data approved 92 units last month. That’s down from the 454 units approved in January 2008.

The next lowest monthly total since January 2004 was the 153 units approved in December, making the total for the past two months combined just 245.

The state agency says the most dramatic drop from last year was seen in Stamford.
