A Connecticut legislative panel has voted to advance a bill that would ban thermal receipt or cash register receipt paper that contains a chemical some scientists consider to be dangerous, The Associated Press reports.
An early tally on Wednesday showed the General Assembly’s General Law Committee approving the proposed ban of Bisphenol (BISS’-phen-ol) A in receipts. If ultimately enacted by the full legislature, the ban would take effect on Oct. 1, 2013.
The Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Connecticut is lobbying for the ban. Advocates said they worry about the chemical rubbing off and somehow being ingested or absorbed through the skin.
Lawmakers stripped a provision in the bill requiring the Chemical Innovations Institute to annually provide lawmakers with a list of chemicals considered to be highly toxic and safe alternatives.
