CT official: State will close Enfield prison

Connecticut’s Department of Correction will close the 730-bed Enfield Correctional Institution by Oct. 1 as part of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s plan to eliminate the state’s budget deficit, an administration official tells The Associated Press.

About 350 of the 723 inmates at the medium-security facility would be moved to the Cheshire Correctional Institution, which has some housing space that has not been used in about 15 years.

The rest of the inmates will be spread among the other prisons in Connecticut, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the department has not yet publicly announced the move.

Department of Correction spokesman Brian Garnett acknowledged that closing the prison is being considered as the department looks to cut $62.9 million from its budget in the current fiscal year and $78 million in the next. But he said no final decision has been made.
