Global health and disaster-relief nonprofit Americares says it has received a $50 million gift — the largest donation in the organization’s history.
The Stamford-based nonprofit says the donation comes from a philanthropic Connecticut family that has supported Americares for 30 years, and will be disbursed to the organization over the next five years. It did not name the family.
Americares said it will use the money to help address global health challenges and achieve its goal of helping 100 million people access quality healthcare by 2030.
The organization says communities around the world are facing increasing humanitarian needs driven by conflict, climate-related disasters and supply chain disruptions, and these challenges have been compounded by huge reductions in international aid.
The World Health Organization reports funding cuts have directly affected nearly 5,700 health facilities, including more than 2,000 that have suspended operations, reducing access to services for 53 million people.
Specifically, Americares will use the $50 million gift to advance its Access to Medicine program, which is one of the pillars of its five-year strategic plan.
Americares supports more than 4,000 health centers worldwide and says last year it delivered $1.8 billion in aid.
