CT new housing permits see monthly decline

New home construction in Connecticut declined 26 percent in May compared to the previous month, but showed a slight increase over the same time period last year.

Connecticut municipalities issued 229 new housing permits in May, compared to 310 in April 2010. But compared to a year ago, new home construction increased 19 percent, compared to the 192 permits issued in April 2009, according to data released Wednesday by the Department of Economic and Community Development.

Permits are issued for single-family houses, condominiums or apartment units.

New home permits for 2010 remain slightly ahead of last year’s pace.

For the first five months of this year, Connecticut towns and cities issued 1,097 new permits, a 6.4 percent increase from the 1,031 permits issued during the same time period last year.
