National chain AMC Theaters said it will pay $172 million to acquire privately-held Starplex Cinemas, which has theaters in Berlin and Southington.
The deal, slated to close by year’s end, would add 33 first-run and discount movie theaters in 10 states to AMC’s 347 locations, which it said have limited geographic overlap.
Kansas-based AMC said the deal would contribute to its earnings per share in the first year, and that it would find efficiencies by combining human resources, accounting and other back-office functions.
Last year, Carmike Cinemas acquired three Digiplex theaters in Connecticut as part of a $45 million deal.
