CT moves ahead on Bridgeport schools takeover

Connecticut education leaders have set a July 18 deadline for applications from potential new members of Bridgeport’s school board, which is being dismissed under a state takeover, The Associated Press reports.

The state Department of Education is taking over management of the troubled Bridgeport schools and replacing its education board after some city leaders, including the mayor, said the current board was too dysfunctional to run the system.

Acting Connecticut Education Commissioner George Coleman is meeting this week with Bridgeport business leaders, parents, officials, community groups and others to discuss the transition and get their suggestions.

He has said that selecting a new five-member panel to replace the nine-member school board could take about a month. It’s unclear if Bridgeport Superintendent of Schools John Ramos and some other administrators might also be replaced.
