CT mobster’s Danbury waste-haul assets sold

The last of the Danbury waste transfer assets belonging to convicted mobster James Galante have been sold, authorities say.

Winters Brothers Waste Systems, which acquired some assets last March, has acquired the last piece of the Danbury transfer stations from the U.S. Marshals Service.

The marshals seized Galante’s Automated Waste Disposal and other assets in connection with his 2008 conviction for racketeering. The city of Danbury was among Galante’s biggest customers.

The trash-hauling operation was among some 25 businesses valued at $100 million that Galante forfeited to the federal government.

Terms of the deal, which includes the two primary transfer station buildings on White Street, weren’t disclosed.

Winters Brothers did not immediately respond to calls for comment.

In a statement, Winters said the company plans to spend “several million dollars” will be spent over the next few years to create a state-of-the-art facility and to make it more customer-friendly.

The eventual installation of new scales will allow haulers to weigh in and weigh out faster, he said.
