CT might reduce electric bill tax

With Connecticut’s state revenues higher than expected, Gov. Dannel Malloy said he will work toward lowering ratepayers’ electric bills.

The state had an assessment on all electric bills to repay utilities Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating their expenses stemming from the deregulation of the electric market.

When that assessment was expected to expire last year, the state imposed a new charge on the bills to cover its borrowing to balance the general fund budget.

Malloy said he will use this year’s tax surplus to pay down that charge on electric bills.

“This is a golden opportunity to deliver immediate, quantifiable rate-relief to Connecticut consumers this session,” AARP State Director Brenda Kelly said in a press release. “While we do not oppose restoring the conservation fund, we agree with Governor Malloy-rate relief must come first!”
