CT medical marijuana sales continue decline as adult-use market grows

Adult-use cannabis sales in Connecticut reached a new monthly high of more than $11.5 million in May, surpassing medical marijuana sales for the first time since the market launched earlier this year.

While adult-use sales exceeded $11.5 million in May, up from April’s $10.2 million, medical marijuana sales reached just more than $11.2 million, down from $11.4 million the month prior, according to new data from the state Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). It represents the second straight month that medical sales have declined, while adult-use sales have steadily increased since the industry began retail sales Jan. 10.

In May, DCP reported that medical marijuana patients purchased 312,758 products at an average price of $35.86, while adult-use customers purchased 292,054 products at an average price of $39.47.

This shift from medical sales to adult-use correlates to the drop in medical marijuana patients since the adult-use market began. According to data from the state, there were 44,508 licensed medical marijuana patients in Connecticut on May 31, compared to 48,896 on Jan. 31. At its peak, the medical marijuana program had almost 60,000 patients.
