CT, Mass. drove N. England’s 2010 GDP

Four New England states — Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island — were among the 20 fastest growing state economies in 2010, federal data shows.

Connecticut’s 3.1 percent growth in gross domestic product last year was 12th best in the U.S. and reversed two previous years of decline, the federal Census Bureau’s Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Tuesday.

Meantime, Massachusetts’ 4.2 percent growth ranked fourth nationally; Vermont was No. 10 at 3.2 percent; and Rhode Island was 18th, at 2.8 percent, the bureau said.

Rounding out the region, Maine was 27th at 2.1 percent, while New Hampshire came in 43rd, at 1.3 percent.

Overall, New England’s 3.4 percent GDP growth rate was second only to the Mideast region’s 3.8 percent growth. That region consists of Delaware, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.

The U.S. GDP rose 2.6 percent last year, the government said.
