Of the total amount of federal taxes Connecticut businesses and individuals pay each year, the federal government only returns approximately 83 percent in the form of contracts, payroll, grants and assistance, according to an analysis by the National Priorities Project.
In 2013, Connecticut paid approximately $49.5 billion in federal taxes, and received back $41 billion, said NPP, which bills itself as the only nonprofit, non-partisan federal budget research organization in the country that aims to make the numbers more accessible to the public.
Connecticut received $10.6 billion in federal contracts last year, as well as $2.7 billion in wages.
While the state pays the fourth-highest amount of total federal taxes, federal money makes up a smaller piece of its budget, 23.6 percent, than the national average of 32 percent.
