CT lawmakers to consider new airport authority

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is proposing a new independent authority to market and operate Connecticut’s six state-owned airports, The Associated Press reports.

The General Assembly’s Commerce Committee is scheduled to vote on legislation on Tuesday that would create the new Connecticut Airport Authority, the first step in the legislative approval process.

The new authority would oversee Bradley International, Brainard-Hartford, Waterbury-Oxford, Windham, Danielson and Groton-New London airports. Malloy said during the gubernatorial campaign that an independent authority is needed to make the state more business-friendly and to respond more quickly and easily to market changes in the industry.

Malloy’s budget director, Benjamin Barnes, says the Department of Transportation will work with lawmakers over the coming weeks on the details of the new authority. Right now, several agencies and various boards oversee the airports.
