CT lawmakers say tax deal with Malloy is close

Leaders of the General Assembly’s tax-writing committee said Monday they are close to a deal with Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on a revised tax package that will attempt to address some concerns raised by the public about the governor’s unpopular plan to raise taxes by $1.5 billion, The Associated Press reports.

Sen. Eileen Daily, D-Westbrook, co-chairwoman of the Finance Revenue and Bonding Committee, said the Democratic-controlled panel could vote on an agreement Tuesday, but more likely on Thursday. The committee faces an April 27 deadline.

“There’s no comparison to the recent past,” said Daily, when asked about the pace of closed-door negotiations with Malloy’s administration, compared with former Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s administration. “Much more progress is being made. The give-and-take is much better. The administration has been very willing to listen and to get the information that we’ve gathered in public hearings.”

Malloy has said he hopes the General Assembly can act on a budget by May 6. The session adjourns June 8.
