CT law firm Carmody hires new CFO, chief operating officer

New Haven-based law firm Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey LLP has hired a former West Virginia law firm CEO as its new chief financial officer and chief operating officer.

Carmody announced Tuesday that Michael T. Bumgarner has joined the firm after more than two decades with West Virginia-based Flaherty Sensabaugh Bonasso PLLC, where he served as chief operating officer and later chief executive officer.

According to Carmody, Bumgarner is a certified public accountant, certified legal manager and past president of the Association of Legal Administrators.

In his new role, he will oversee the firm’s financial operations, systems and strategic initiatives.
Carmody has about 90 attorneys and offices in New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury, Guilford, New London, Southbury and Litchfield.

The appointment follows the retirement of longtime Chief Operating Officer Craig Appel. Carmody said it expanded the role to include chief financial officer responsibilities as the firm pursues growth initiatives under Managing Partner Fatima Lahnin, who took over the firm’s leadership earlier this year.

In a February interview with Hartford Business Journal, Lahnin said Carmody plans to pursue expansion opportunities and add attorneys in key practice areas while emphasizing talent retention and development.
