CT lauds firms’ environmental gains

Nine Connecticut companies were among 17 honorees cited today by the governor for their efforts to clean and maintain the environment.

During a State Capitol ceremony, Gov. M. Jodi Rell handed out the Department of Environmental Protection’s 11th annual GreenCircle Award to companies, civic groups and individuals from across the state.

“Protecting the environment is not just about laws and government regulation,” DEP Commissioner Amey Marrella said. “It is about people making a difference, whether as individuals, through an organization, or businesses who want to go ‘green’ to protect our natural resources and use them wisely.”

Among businesses honored:

Efficient Lighting and Maintenance Inc. in Brookfield, which supplies energy saving technologies, such as lighting and refrigeraton retrofits, the use of timers and occupancy sensors, and replacement of inefficient motors.

Durham Manufacturing Co. for replacing a vapor degreaser and with a more environmentally-friendly cleaning system. West State Mechanical Inc. in Torrington also was cited for its work on the project.

EMSAR – Stratford identified its greenhouse gas emissions and found ways to curb them.

ESPN Inc. in Bristol implemented a used electronic recycling program and an employee electronics recycling drive on the Bristol Campus to celebrate America Recycles Day.

Secure Eco Shred, another Brookfield firm, donated a paper shredding truck to the New Milford Rotary Club, which allowed them to conduct a public shredding event.

Branson Ultrasonics Corp. in Danbury initiated a practice of replacing and recycling heavy duty industrial switches that contain toxic mercury.

New England Grease Trap LLP in Meriden works with municipalities to implement the state environmental agency’s permit plan for wastewater discharged from food establishments.
