CT lands $11.3M in HUD shelter awards

Federal housing authorities have awarded $11.3 million in construction grants and rent subsidies to provide 62 units of affordable shelter for Connecticut’s low-income elderly and disabled in Southington, New London and Canaan.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Wednesday the awards to three nonprofit sponsors.

In Southington, HUD will advance Mutual Housing Association of South Central CT $6.5 million toward building 40 one-bedroom apartments equipped with amenities that will allow disabled residents to stay in place as they age. In addition, residents will get a three-year rent subsidy worth $602,100, HUD said.

In New London, The Connecticut Fund Inc. will collect $2.3 million in construction money, plus a three-year rent subsidy of $180,900 to erect a 12-unit apartment building with one-, two- and three-bedroom units for the mentally disabled.
