CT labor dept. lands $5M for apprenticeships

The state Department of Labor said it has won a $5 million federal grant that will help pay for tuition and training costs for 1,500 apprentices and pre-apprentices.

The funding, part of the American Apprenticeship Initiative, targets employee training in advanced manufacturing, health care and business services, DOL said.

It’s similar to the state’s own Manufacturing Innovation Fund Apprenticeship Program, which recently received $7.8 million to create apprenticeships in manufacturing exclusively.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced $175 million in apprenticeship grants on Wednesday.

State labor officials said they have “significant” participation commitments from employers, including Groton submarine maker Electric Boat.
