New home construction in Connecticut fell sharply again in July, as new housing permits issued during the month fell by 38 percent.
Connecticut municipalities issued 278 new housing permits in July, compared to 446 in July 2009.
The one bright spot was that July saw an uptick from the previous month, when Connecticut cities and towns issued 247 permits in June, according to data released Tuesday by the Department of Economic and Community Development.
Permits are issued for single-family houses, condominiums or apartment units.
July’s dismal results now put Connecticut’s new home permits for 2010, behind last year’s pace. Through the first seven months of 2009 1,880 new housing permits were issued, compared to 1,622 so far this year.
The data from DECD includes housing permits issued from 128 of the 169 municipalities in Connecticut.
