CT jobless rate falls, but economy sheds jobs in Sept.

Connecticut’s unemployment rate for September fell to 5.4 percent despite the state shedding 5,200 jobs during the month.

In August, Connecticut’s unemployment rate was 5.6 percent and last September the state’s jobless rate was 5.3 percent.

That’s part of the mixed jobs report gleaned from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Connecticut business survey, released Thursday.

Preliminary, month-to-month Connecticut nonfarm job estimates show the state shed 5,200 jobs in September for a total seasonally adjusted workforce of 1,685,000. However, over the year, nonagricultural employment in the state has grown by approximately 12,800 jobs, or about 1,067 jobs per month.

In addition, August’s originally-released job gain of 300 was revised downward to a loss of 300, while year-to-date seasonally adjusted job growth is 5,000 through September.

“Connecticut saw job losses in September for the third month in a row and our three-month average of total nonfarm jobs saw its first decline this year,” said Andy Condon, director of the USBLS’ Office of Research. “However, market signs are mixed as the state’s unemployment rate continues to fall.”
