CT jobless rate eases to 7.8 percent

Connecticut unemployment fell to 7.8 pecent in July, despite the loss of 2,800 jobs, the state Labor Department said.

The state’s jobless rate was 8.1 percent in June. In July 2008, unemployment was 6.1 percent.

U.S. unemployment was 9.7 percent last month.

Eight of Connecticut’s industry sectors shed jobs last month, with state government leading the way, idling 2,400 workers, the labor agency said.

Manufacturing followed with 1,200 jobs lost, and education and health services dropped by 800 workers.

Those losses were offset by gains in the leisure-hospitality sector, which added 3,100 jobs in July, and professional and business services, which gained 900, the agency said.
