CT Inc. turning out for Special Olympics

About 1,500 volunteers from 10 of Connecticut corporations and organizations will be assisting with this weekend’s Special Olympics Connecticut Summer Games in Hamden.

The games’ opening ceremonies — featuring athletes, speakers, entertainers and the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic flame — will begin at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Moore Field House at Southern Connecticut State University. They end Sunday.

Ten major sponsors — United Technologies Corp., Foxwoods Resort Casino, TD Bank, ESPN, ALSTOM Power, Anthem Blue Cross of Connecticut, Mercer, Bank of America, Knights of Columbus Walter Camp Football Foundation — have employees, families and friends who will be involved as coaches, judges, medal presenters and athlete escort, games spokeswoman Laura Gremelsbacker said.

More than 2,000 athletes will compete in a variety of events including track and field, aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, tennis and soccer. The competition will be held in three locations: Southern Connecticut State University, Yale University and Hamden Hall athletic fields.
