Connecticut’s tax collector accuses the former owner of three defunct Cold Stone Creamery ice cream shops in the Hartford area of cheating the state out of more than $50,000 in sales taxes.
Ellen Aaron, 44, of Wallingford surrendered last week to state Department of Revenue agents who had a warrant for her arrest, authorities said.
Aaron is free on a written promise to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Feb. 15, the agency said.
She faces multiple charges of failing to file sales and use tax returns and failure to file withholding tax returns for employees at the three ice cream shops she owned in Newington, Simsbury and South Windsor, authorities said. All three shops closed last year.
Aaron faces 26 counts of failure to pay sales tax, 22 counts of failure to file sales tax returns, and four counts of failure to file withholding tax returns, authorities said.
Each count is a class A misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of up to $1,000, or both.
Aaron could not be immediately reached for comment.
