New home construction in Connecticut collapsed in April, as new housing permits issued during the month fell by 72 percent, state figures show.
Connecticut municipalities issued 216 new housing permits in April, compared to 763 in the year-ago period.
With the new housing units authorized in April, the year-to-date total reached 658 units, putting Connecticut well behind last year’s new home construction pace by 50 percent, when 1,321 permits were issued, according to data released Thursday by the state Department of Economic and Community Development.
Permits are issued for single-family houses, condominiums and apartment units.
The data from DECD includes housing permits issued from 128 of the 169 municipalities in Connecticut.
